Happy Full Moon Lunar Eclipse in Virgo! 🌕♍🌾

This eclipse is happening Tuesday, March 3rd with maximum totality occuring at 3:33am PT. If you live in North America and feel inclined to get outside at that time, you may get a glimpse of this “blood moon.”

Because this eclipse is happening in Virgo, it’s ruled by Mercury — the planet of thought, communication, perception, and interpretation.

And right now, Mercury is retrograde. 🙃

Mercury Retrograde Sauce

If you’ve heard me talk about Mercury retrograde before, you know I don’t really agree with the pop-culture take that everything just falls apart during these cycles. I actually think Mercury retrograde is misunderstood medicine, meant to slow us down so we can be more mindful. To review, rethink, revise something in your life.

But even though I typically disagree with that pop-culture notion, I think I know where it came from. Because honestly, when Mercury is retrograde in the particular sign of Pisces, I do think our thoughts can get a little confused and scrambled.

Mercury is a planet that likes clarity. It likes logic. It likes conclusions, facts, timelines, plans. Pisces is none of those things.

Pisces is intuitive, emotional, nonlinear, symbolic, and spiritually attuned.

Mercury wants to think things through; Pisces wants to intuit or pray for a solution.

So when Mercury is retrograde in Pisces, the mind is asked to operate in a realm it doesn’t get and can’t control.

That’s why this eclipse is giving strong Four of Cups energy.

4 of Cups

Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot

The Four of Cups is often interpreted as a card about being closed off to an opportunity the universe is offering. But there’s also something deeper happening here.

In the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, we see three cups already on the ground in front of the figure. These cups represent what’s familiar — what we already know, what we’ve already experienced, what we believe we can manage or control. The figure seems focused on those three cups, as if he believes stability comes from keeping his attention ONLY on what’s “known.”

And then here’s this fourth cup being offered from the clouds. An offering, a gift, that he can’t even seem to entertain or comprehend. They think they have things under control and stabilized. Why change?

But the invitation of this card asks:

What if the thing that would actually stabilize you is the very thing you don’t recognize as stability?

Nobody would choose a three-legged stool over a four-legged one. Yet we do this psychologically all the time. We keep the job that seems to offer security and ignore other opportunities. We stay in relationships or pick the same type of partners because their energy is familiar. We cling to the three cups we know and ignore the fourth cup that arrives as an unknown.

Modern Witch Tarot

Cups represent intuition, emotional truth, and inner knowing. So that fourth cup may be intuitive guidance, wisdom that doesn’t come from logic, evidence, or proof.

Which means this card could also be asking:

What is your relationship to your intuition and/or to Spirit (Source, the Universe, Creator, God, Goddess, etc.)?

Do you trust it?
Do you dismiss it?
Do you only believe what you can rationally explain?

Do you think the Spirit is here to support you? Or is it indifferent?

Because the figure in the Four of Cups isn’t just rejecting an offer.

They may be rejecting a way of knowing.

Those three cups could represent the forms of knowing we’re comfortable with: logic, experience, and emotional familiarity.

And the fourth cup represents intuitive knowing — the kind that can’t be predicted or controlled.

Mercury retrograde in Pisces may feel like it’s scrambling the mind. But what if it’s not scrambling it, but helping Mercury loosen its need to adhere to the familiar ways of knowing so another intelligence can speak?

Sometimes what feels like confusion is actually an invitation to listen differently. To tune into your heart’s response. To stay open and remember life is filled with gifts that expand our understanding of ourselves.

Sometimes that confusion is inviting us to simply ask: What if?

So this eclipse, and this retrograde (which ends March 20), take the opportunity to tune in to where you’ve mistaken familiarity for stability — and where life is offering you a fourth cup that would actually steady you, if only you were willing to receive it.

Light Seer’s Tarot

Signs You Might Need 4 of Cups Medicine…

If you…

--Aren’t feeling satisfied (or are feeling downright miserable!) in an area of your life, but you feel stuck or confused about how to make a shift

--Rely heavily and solely on logic for decision-making/life-choices

--Become completely dysregulated not knowing how something will turn out (totally human btw)

--Don’t believe you’re intuitive

--Don’t have a relationship with Spirit

--Are afraid of change because you believe you’ve got things “under control” and don’t want to lose it

…it might be time you take a sip from that 4th cup!
